INTERVIEWS ABOUT RACISM IN HAMBURG AT 6.2.2001

We interviewed six people of different cultures in the streets of Hamburg city. We asked them what do they think about foreign people and racism. We also wanted to know if they´ve faced racism and what could we do against it.

A. What do you think about foreign people?/ What do you think about racism?

 All the people we interviewed were clearly against racism. They thought that racism is a big problem. A couple of the interviewed people said that racism is a bigger problem in the eastern Germany than in the western side, for example because of the high unemployment rates. "If you´re a foreigner in Germany, you`ll find it hard to get a job, especially if you don`t know the language."

What do you think about foreign people - it`s a question do you like people or yourself. "It`s good to meet other cultures, traditions and people." When we go abroad, we`re all foreigners there. "Racism is not pleasant, because we are all human-beings." "It`s stupid to judge people just because they`re from another culture - it makes no sense."
B. Have you faced racism? What kind of racism?

One of the interviewed people said that there are racists everywhere and we shouldn`t pay attention to them. We should remember that there are also a lot of people who are very friendly. Many of the interviewed people have friends from another cultures.
C. In your opinion, what can we do about racism?

People that we interviewed thought that we always have to work and fight against racism. "If you face a situation where racism occurs, you should try to work and interfere it." One person thought that we should educate racists that they`ll become more open to see that we`re all human-beings. "We must all try to come together because we`re all living in the same world. We have to co-operate." One of the noteworthy points is that politicians should work harder against racism and people must talk more with each other.We hear and read about racism in media all the time. It`s important to follow the media because then we know what`s going on. We should learn to open up our minds.
D. Do you know any projects, programms or internetpages or something else made against racism?

A couple of the interviewed people didn`t know any projects or programs against racism. A couple of them knew some internet pages but one thought that they won´t help against racism. "Nordischer Zentralrad is constantly working against racism." Once a year in May there is also one rock festival in Germany called Rock am Ring, where famous European groups perform against racism.
